Six Stroke Roll Kick Substitution Lick
Posted in Intermediate Lessons, Rudiment Studies
This simple drum lick incorporates the bass drum into the six-stroke roll drum rudiment, resulting in a more angular and heavily accented roll. An additional four-note pattern (RLLF) is included to be practiced alongside the six-stroke roll lick. The combination of these two patterns creates syncopated rhythmic phrases without breaking the flow of the roll.
Note: this lesson assumes the modern interpretation of the six-stroke roll with all notes played with equal note value (an inversion of the paradiddle-diddle rudiment), rather than the traditional version in which the single strokes have twice the note value of the double strokes.
